Combining Sentences through Coordination and SubordinationDefinition
What is sentence coordination? What is subordination?
Coordination and subordination are simply two strategies for showing the relationship between ideas in a sentence.
Coordination combines two ideas that are equally important.
Subordiation combines two ideas in a way that makes one idea more important than the other. The less important idea is dependent on--or subordinate to--the more important idea.
Both strategies use conjunctions to combine independent clauses into a single sentence.
