Plagiarism
Plagiarism is a kind of theft. Plagiarism consists of presenting someone else's words or ideas as your own or of not properly crediting your sources. Sometimes plagiarism is inadvertent--the result of carelessness or ignorance rather than deliberate deception. Still, however, it's a serious academic offense that can result in an automatic failing grade on an assignment. Second offenses often result in even stiffer penalties. Taking the right kind of research notes is the first step in making sure you don't plagiarize.
